JULY 15, 3:00 p.m. … special children’s STORY TIME, craft & booksigning. Local author and illustrator JUNE ATSUKO MARTEL does a story time, reading her new book IN MY DAY to the kids. This children’s book helps kids experience the sights and feelings of contrasting cultures in a nostalgic era by spending a day with a girl from Japan and a boy from America. June will also do a Japanese paper craft with the kids.
JULY 17, 7:00 p.m. … THIRD THURSDAY WORDS, featuring local artist, writer, performer and spoken word master JASON GRAHAM, aka MOSLEY WOTTA. Join us for what’s sure to be a great performance. I really encourage you to give this event a go. Graham is phenomenal performer and was featured in The Bulletin earlier this year. Those over 21, come on down and enjoy complimentary wine or beer … those under, we’re happy to share Coca Cola, tea or water.
JULY 19, 2:00 p.m. … I will be at the Tower Theatre selling TODD PARR’s books in conjunction with his STORY STARS presentation for the Deschutes Public Library. I’ll be selling at the table before as well as after, when Todd will also be at the table to sign books. His many colorful children’s books include the Otto series (OTTO GOES TO THE BEACH, OTTO GOES TO BED, etc.) as well as others, including READING MAKES YOU FEEL GOOD and a perennial favorite with the three- to five-year-old set, UNDERWEAR DO’S AND DON’TS. Tickets to this event are free, but are required, so be sure to pick up yours at the library.
JULY 21, 6:00 p.m. … Federal public defender STEVEN T. WAX is in the store to discuss his book KAFKA COMES TO AMERICA: FIGHTING FOR JUSTICE IN THE WAR ON TERROR, A PUBLIC DEFENDER’S ACCOUNT. Wax masterfully delivers a harrowing story of the erosion of civil liberties after the September 11 terrorist attaches in a powerful testimony that reads like a thriller. Wax’s book follows the story of two men he represented, both victims of post-9/11 conterterrorism measures.
And at the end of the month we have our BOOK CLUB (JULY 28 at 6:00 p.m.). Our book for July is the Oscar Wilde classic THE PICTURE OF DORIAN GRAY. Reading this you can see why it was scandalous at the time (it first appeared in Lippincott’s Magazine in 1890). Immerse yourself in a classic and join us on the 28th for a good discussion and some wine. Speaking of classics, I finally watched the 2005 film version of Pride and Prejudice last night. While I’m not usually a fan of movies adapted from books, I must say it’s a delight to see Mr. Darcy come to life!

Speaking of the TWILIGHT series … that fourth book in the series, BREAKING DAWN, is released on August 2. We have a few cases coming in and will do a midnight selling for those of you who just cannot wait to get your hands on a copy! So, fans, mark your calendars for August 1 at 11:00 p.m., when we open the doors late for Meyer fans! We can begin selling the book at midnight. It’s July! July is the best fishing month in Central Oregon. The strongest summer hatches are happening, and the summer steelhead start making their first appearance. The caddis hatch is in full swing on the Lower Deschutes, Callibeatis are popping on East Lake, and catch rates are increasing on Crane Prairie. The only problem during July is deciding where to fish. There are just too many great choices.

We’ve moved!! Finally, the new store is a reality! Since mid June we’ve been residing in the new location. The new store has much better lighting, spacious ceilings, and a casting pond to test new rods and lines. The new location is just up the street from our previous store, on the corner of Knoll and Century Dr. If you’ve not been in yet, please make the trip to check out our new home. We just refreshed our supply of Shark Skin Lines and the fly bins are full with all the July necessities.
Come on by and say hello. Dave was in Alaska in June, and has some new stories.
Rumbo Patagon - Fly Fishing in Chile We are proud to be the newest booking agent for Rumbo Patagon and Coyhaique River Lodge, in the Patagonia region of Chile. To celebrate our new relationship we are hosting their annual Barbeque here at our fly shop. Join us and the staff of Rumbo Patagon from 5-10 pm on Sunday August 24th for a small feast of traditional Chilean fare. Food and beverages are compliments of Fly and Field Outfitters and Rumbo Patagon. Owner/operator of Rumbo Patagon, Gaston Urrejola, will be on hand to answers questions. Be sure to come by for his presentation beginning around 9 pm.

Steelhead Season Prediction All the indicators are predicting the best steelhead season on the Lower Deschutes in many years. Steelhead are storming into the Colombia river. The counts over Bonneville and the Dalles dams are double what they were last year, and are higher than the 10 year averages. Couple vast amounts of fish with high, cold water on the Lower Deschutes, and you get a banner season on the Lower Deschutes! Steelhead have been caught as high as Beavertail and we’re getting decent reports from the lowest 10 miles. Then next month or so will really determine the outcome for our season. Cross your fingers that these conditions continue.
If you’ve been waiting to catch a steelhead on the fly, this will be the year.
Monthly Spey casting Classes
Fly and Field Outfitters and Bruce Berry Present On-Water Spey Day
This is a great tool to get you on your way with spey fishing techniques and a fairly intense/comprehensive class. You will need waders & boots for our day on the water and feel free to bring your own rod/reel/line combination if you would like. Class will start at 10:00 a.m. going through basics with a short break around 1:00 p.m. Lunch and refreshments will be provided. We will resume on the water about 1:30 p.m. and go officially until 4:00 p.m. Any diehards who have not had enough at that time can feel free to stay for more personalized one on one instruction or to talk line matching, fishing technique, etc. Class cost is $100.00 and class size is limited to 8 maximum so there is great hands on learning time for each participating fly fisher. * July 25th & 26th * August 15th &16th * September 15th &16th * October 11th & 12th

Just a brief update on Book Club as well as upcoming events and storytimes at Camalli Book Company.
On Monday, June 30, at 6:00 the Camalli BOOK CLUB discusses our June pick, Stef Penney’s The Tenderness of Wolves (6:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m.). Join in for the discussion or just be honest about it, say you didn’t read the book, and join us for a glass of wine anyway … that’s okay, too. Our July pick is The Thirteenth Tale.
Tuesday, July 15, 3:00 p.m. … special story time! Local authors/illustrators June Atsuko Martel and Sandy Beelmann share their new children’s book, In My Day. June will also do a paper craft with the kids after the story. In My Day follows two children, one in Japan and the other in America, through a typical day in the early 1900s.
For THIRD THURSDAY WORD in July (7/17) we have Jason Graham coming in. Jason is a local artist/poet/musician … you may have read the article about him in the Bulletin back in January. Join us on July 17th for an evening of spoken word and for the grown-ups, a glass of wine or beer.
Saturday, July 19, at 2:00 children’s book author and illustrator Todd Parr visits the Tower Theatre. Camalli will be there selling his books. Admission is by free ticket, available at all Deschutes Public Libraries beginning July 5.
July Story Times … We went on a brief hiatus, but will resume story times starting Wednesday, July 2, at 3:00. Because of summer schedules, we are unable to do morning story times for awhile. Here’s the story time schedule for July:

The second story revolves around Adel Hamad, a Sudanese-born hospital administrator arrested in Pakistan while doing refugee relief work. Imprisoned for six months in “a fetid hell” for alleged connections with al-Qaeda, Hamad was hooded and shackled and transferred to Guantánamo Bay, where he has languished for the past four years. Free Admission to Historical Museum July 4, 2008
The Des Chutes Historical Museum will celebrate its anniversary on the 4th of July with free admission and free ice cream from 10 am to 4 pm. The Des Chutes Historical Museum opened July 4, 1980, in historic Reid School in downtown Bend with Governor Vic Atiyeh among the guests for the Museum’s grand opening. For 28 years, the Museum has gathered, preserved and displayed the history of Deschutes County.
Since 1980, the Museum has used its anniversary as an opportunity to thank the community for its support with free admission and free ice cream treats. The Museum features six exhibit rooms covering archaeology and Native American tribes to the Brooks-Scanlon and Shevlin-Hixon mills to local Veterans history. The Museum’s newest displays feature clothing from the early 20th century, highlighting men, women and children’s clothing and accessories.
