MENOPAUSE THE MUSICAL The Hilarious Celebration of Women and “The Change”.

Since March 2001, the hilarious show Menopause The Musical has entertained and inspired women from coast-to-coast and internationally. The work of writer Jeanie Linders, Menopause The Musical features 25 re-lyricized tunes from the ‘60s and ‘70s and culminates with a salute to women who are experiencing “The Change”.

Set in a department store, where four women with seemingly nothing in common but a black lace bra meet by chance, the musical pokes fun at things such as hot flashes, memory loss, mood swings, wrinkles, night sweats and eating binges. The show’s intended message is that menopause is a passage, but it should no longer be “The Silent Passage”. It is a stage in every woman’s life that is perfectly normal.

Menopause The Musical® has entertained audiences across the country in more than 100 cities. Each week nearly 35,000 women of all ages and stages find their spirits lifted by the show’s light-hearted look at menopause. It is estimated that nearly 10 million women in 12 countries have attended a performance since the show’s opening in Orlando, Fla., in 2001. Even men who are brave enough to come with their wives have a great time, after the show starts you can see them laughing and poking their wife and saying “That’s you honey”.

Directed by Maralyn Thoma, Artistic Director of 2nd Street Theater, the show features four talented local performers; Lyryn Cate as the Iowa Housewife, Rachel Deegan as the Professional Woman, Anne Du Fresne as the Soap Star and Lori White as the Earth Mother.

Performance dates. All shows through August 30th are sold out. New dates available are… September 3 through September 27th., 2008, Wednesdays through Saturdays at 8pm and Sunday matinees at 3pm. There will be no performances Sept 10th – 14th due to schedule conflicts. Tickets are $25.00 Adults, $20.00 for Students and Seniors (62 and up). Call the Box Office at (541) 312-9626 or go online at 2ndstreettheater.com.

Deschutes River Gets Its Day
MAJOR DOWNTOWN ASSET IS APPRECIATED
On September 13th, join the Deschutes River Conservancy (DRC), in a celebration of the Deschutes River and all that it provides us: clean water, fish, wildlife, vegetation, power, and beauty. On this one day, A Day for the River, the DRC hopes to increase the appreciation of the river by providing an occasion to experience the entire river – from the headwaters in the Cascade Mountains to the mouth at the Columbia River. Partnering with local outfitters, the DRC has coordinated a number of activities, offering a chance to enjoy the river by fishing, canoeing, kayaking, or birding. All outfitters will donate the proceeds to the DRC in support of their mission to restore streamflow and improve water qualit in the Deschutes Basin.

A free public afternoon event will take place near the Colorado Street Bridge at McKay Park in Bend. It will include a kayak & canoe demo day sponsored by fun kid’s activities, wonderful food, local bluegrass music and a delightful beer brewed especially for the DRC. For more information about A Day for the River or the DRC: www.deschutesriver.org or 541.382.4077 ext.10.

THE PAST & FUTURE OF ORGANIZED LABOR … On Wednesday, September 3, at 6:30 p.m. Fernando Gapasin, co-author of the recently released SOLIDARITY DIVIDED: THE CRISIS IN ORGANIZED LABOR AND A NEW PATH TOWARD SOCIAL JUSTICE, visits the store to discuss his book and the state of the U.S. trade union movement. Candid and accessible, SOLIDARITY DIVIDED offers a critical examination of labor’s current crisis as well as a plan for a new way forward into the twenty-first century. Gapasin and co-author Bill Fletcher chart changes in U.S. manufacturing, examine the onslaught of globalization, consider the influence of the environment on labor, and provide the first broad analysis of the fallout from the 2000 and 2004 elections on the U.S. labor movement.

A book would make a great gift for the new student!

MAY I RECOMMEND … stargazing! I’ve stocked up on a number of books that help kids and adults alike navigate the stars. One of my favorite discoveries is one by H.A. Rey of all people … the same guy who wrote the Curious George series. His book FIND THE CONSTELLATIONS (originally published in 1954) includes star charts, a guide to the constellations, and information about the seasons. This is just one of many that we now have in stock, but regardless of the guide you choose, stargazing is a great way to end a day and a great activity to share with kids.

Happy reading!
Tina
